 Welcome to the first news blog for Driglington Digital

First of all a big thanks to Vic Berry for looking after the group for the past few years, and best wishes for the future.

My name is Steve Thompson and I am taking over from Vic starting 8th of May. My background is that I started at BT in 1973 as an apprentice, working on Transmission Systems, Microwave Radio Links and Satellite Television, eventually taking voluntary redundancy in 1994 when I move to Yorkshire Cable (Now Virginmedia). Then leaving there for semi-retirement in 2013 to work for myself teaching various subjects to adults withi the community. I would like to add that this blog is for any members of the group to add stories or information which may be useful to the whole group, such as a report of one of the sessions, or what did you learn last week etc. 

I am a great believer in the use of blogs, and I will be delivering a session sometime soon on how to create a blog of your own.

10 tips to keep you safe on your phone

 1: Update everything. Your phone, your apps. Security patches exist for a reason. Install them to use strong, unique passwords. 2: Use a password manager, they're better than using password 123 for every account or even using a notebook. 3: Enable 2 factor authentication, but use an authenticator app, not SMS. Remember the SIM swapping thing? Microsoft and Google have authenticator apps. 4: Be paranoid about links. If you get a text or e-mail,  assume it's malicious until proven otherwise. Hover over links to see the actual URL. Better yet, just go directly to the website yourself. 5: Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not using them.
